Mackinnon's Kilts
MacKinnon’s Kilts is a family run business located in the beautiful San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. Owned by siblings Karen Harper and Scott Storlie since 2006, they regularly travel to Scottish Highland Games, Irish Festivals, and Celtic Gatherings. At these events, it is common to see their daughters Bryanna and Kyleena Harper and Hanna Storlie ably working the booth and providing exemplary service, something MacKinnon’s prides itself upon. At their first show the Celtic band Needfire affectionately referred to the ladies as “MacKinnon’s Kilt Lasses,” and the nickname stuck. After being fitted with a new kilt, the customer is encouraged to “drop his/her drawers,” and a prominently displayed bell is rung loudly. The clang and a resonant “Woo-Hoo” can be heard, harking from the MacKinnon booth at a given festival. You’ve gotta be there.
Of Scottish descent, Scott and Karen’s maternal grandmother immigrated to America from Scotland at the turn of the century. Janet Barron was born in Peterhead, and grew up in Aberdeen. As children the two were exposed to Scottish culture and heritage that included bagpipe music and scones, not to mention a delicious roast leg of lamb from time to time. Returning from visits home, Janet would bring the children new kilts, which fostered their love and adoration for tartan. Karen and Scott found an opportunity to create a company honoring their heritage, include their families, and have a good time in pursuit of wearing the kilt.
Proud of their ancestry and staking an interest in their children’s futures, considerable time and effort has gone into building this company. It has become a labor of love and a passion to which they find themselves surrounded by like minded people enjoying the sprit that thrives within the community. Now a part of the Scottish community with their own families, it could be said that life has come full circle.
We’ve had the good fortune to kilt up Celtic rock bands Stand Easy, Needfire and 1916, as well as accessorizing other groups and Pipe bands. Thanks for your support, everyone!
